What is Core Web Vitals?

The three main metrics Google uses to measure site performance: LCP, INP and CLS.

Detailed definition

Core Web Vitals are the three metrics Google takes into account in its SEO rankings as user experience signals: LCP (Largest Contentful Paint — how long the main content takes to load, target <2.5s), INP (Interaction to Next Paint — the first response after a user interaction, target <200ms) and CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift — unexpected layout shifts, target <0.1). They are measured with PageSpeed Insights. Mobile and desktop are assessed separately.

Examples

  • Images without a width/height attribute increase CLS.
  • Using lazy loading on a page improves LCP.
